Vsevolod Kovalevskij

26.02 - 28.02.21

For this IN THE CLOSET⃣ exhibition, Vsevolod Kovalevskij is premiering a video installation titled "Serpents of Knowledge" (2021), one in a three-part series "Wash Up, Wash Down" (2020 - ongoing). The other works are “The Cosmic Serpents” (2019-2020) and "Licker"(2021).

Inspired by research into the methods used for whitewashing, cover-ups, censorship, fake news, the culture of distraction, camouflage, biblical mythology and fear of snakes, in his installations Kovalevskij is interested in how these acts of "washing down" are forming the psyche of society. By combining moving images of biological origins, soft metals and communication devices, he creates "creatures”, or Serpents of Knowledge, the spectator is invited to bite into a world illuminated by a pink hue.

Vsevolod Kovalevskij (b.1988) lives and works between Vilnius and Tromsø. He uses architecture, photography, video installations, text and sculpture as research methodologies, creating a means to question conditions of realities.

The artist attended the Rupert Educational Program in Vilnius, LT (2014), holds a BA and MA from the Vilnius Academy of Arts (2015), MA from Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Arts (2018) and MA in Artists Film and Moving Image from Goldsmiths University of London (2018).
